Lenny invited me to this series of lectures which we taped at WGBH around 1973-1974. I was a music student at Harvard and had an upright spinet in my dorm room. Bernstein was the guest conductor for the Boston Symphony and rehearsed on my piano until his Blutner was delivered to his dorm room at Eliot House. He listened to my Buchla synthesizer compositions stoned. What a great guy.

Such a wonderful salesman for inquiring musical and literary intellect. That "butter-and-honey" voice, bringing the listener in with such an inviting personality, and absolute conviction. I don't know if this helps: but European brass does sound different to USA and UK brass because the instruments that they play on are often slightly different and, as can be heard here, the USA and UK players favour a very pure straight sound whereas in mainland Europe players tend to add more vibrato when they play.

I also own the recording of Bernstein's interpretation, and it is more or less tied for first place along with the other greats (most of which have already been mentioned here). Absolutely a valid interpretation. Too fast for some but Mr. Bernstein is a composer too, and no doubt heard many of his works played, in his opinion, too fast or too slow. This is a great example of the awesome NY Philharmonic and their skill at handling this difficult challenge. They usually only wore the "whites" for outdoor concerts. Perhaps this is a broadcast from Central Park. Thanks for posting!

bellbudy, you're totally right. I had a priest for 24 years that taught me some things I shall never forget and one of those is that the non catholics, sometimes, give the better interpretations to God's things. This Mozart's piece is fantastic and directed by the great Bernstein is truly a genial moment.

I'm afraid that you're wrong. I used to think the same thing though - until I became Catholic (not a watered down pseudo-Catholic, note that). When one becomes a believer, works like this take on new, far more profound dimensions.

What an awesome performance. That trumpet section is insane!
