I have to say that I think Garyowen4ever should have his mouth washed out with soap, although I LIKE the song. It's just that I don't see what a drinking song has to do with the cavalry. You might as well use March of Cambreadth. And insulting me is a pretty crude thing to do. And I don't see how ANYONE could say that Custer was a military genius. Sherman, yes, Sheridan possibly, but Custer? Custer was a silly glory hound who cared only about becoming president. I equate him to Horatio Gates.

Great post, thanks. Custer always loved entertaining tunes such as "Yankee Doodle Dandee" which was used by the Wolverines during tht Civil War. However, you're wrong about the 7th: Custer built the regiment all by himself in 1866. His unit during the Civil War, the Michigan "Wolverines" Brigade, was an entirely different story.

custer liked this song as the horses could in essence "prance" to it as they marched. he had the men always tip their hats as they passed the ladies. adopting this song as their regimental song was custers idea as the 7th was made up primarily of Irish from the michigan area. i believe that before the civil war it was actually a Michigan Cavalry unit, and then after the war given it's permanant active duty status.

it is of celtic or gaelic derivation, german marches going back to hayden usually have a heavy laboring rhythmn like a sledgehammer on your skull. hence the goosestep, this is a cavalry tune. dont argue with me i am an expert on all this i'm germanic and not scots welsh irish. the garryowen spirit is to do or die trying!

And we DO perform an invaluable service(think of the countless films where piano music is in the film score or even right in the movie itself like "The Pianist."). We should start demanding a portion of the profits(say, for instance, $1 per each string tuned)whenever the tuned piano appears in a movie scene. Now isn't that a modest "demand?"

I completely agree. I hate reality shows. It seems to me like the dumbing down of television audiences. There are writers out there that create some beautiful, complex, and dramatic material. I think Garry Shandling proved here that awkward moments are NOT always funny. Pretty clever to put Ricky Gervais in his bouncy little box in such a way. Gervais is a one hit wit who hardly deserves the label 'comic genius'. Hmm,disagreeing with most,I think this interview is great.Shandling manages to make this interview seem like a Sanders Show/Office situation. Both of these guys have used 'awkward situation comedy' brilliantly in their work...here's some more. As for the comparisons to the other interviews in this series,well there's a reason why Larry David et al are so chummy & Hollywood in their interviews...they're in the limelight and selling some series or other. Shandling's has always kept a low profile.
