Actually it used to be a great place - very green, clean and walking distance to the Conservatory. Automobiles became *the problem* only by the end of 80s. Very nostalgic thoughts...

Now... the first piano sound out of brand new "composers' building" belonged to Grigory Ginzburg. He played scales slowly and methodically! Of course his neighbors confronted him immediately about his "non-practicing" theory... Ginzburg only smiled and looked a bit shy and confused! ;) Don't trust pianists when they say: "I don't practice at all..."

Grigory Ginzburg and his family was among lucky ones -- they received an apartment on the 5th floor (if I remember correctly). Now is the *real* story. Ginzburg was famous for his wonderful touch and "pearl like" sound and technique. Meanwhile he always used to say that great skill doesn't need much practicing and playing scales, etudes, etc.

People in USSR (including great composers and pianists) have always had enormous problems obtaining any living space... and here it was -- great building with elevators, restaurant, concierges, movie theater/concert hall -- unbelievable! This building has also been one of the first "cooperatives", i.e. apartments were sold to the owners as a private property!!! ;) Prices were ridiculously low!

Just a little "intimate" story about Ginzburg exactly how I've heard it! Please don't ask me for documental proof! ;) In the mid 50th Soviet Government built huge and very nice apartment building not far away from the Moscow Conservatory, at Nejdanova St., so-called «??? ????????????» - "Composers' building" It WAS and still IS a great place!

this is indeed the sound closer to chopin's piano then the modern piano's. A very clear interpretation, but with great attention to the melodic line. You often hear pianistst running trough the text, but he give's every note his value. He dare's to make rubato's, but it never break's the music (IMO).

Sharp for what? Chopin played his whole life on Fortepianos at A-420 to A-430,which sounded much more "sharp" than modern pianos at A-440. Therefore "sharpening" a modern piano to make it more thin and vulnerable is a logical step short of adopting Fortepianos consistent with Chopin's life.
