Can't help loving to listen Sutherland's voice.. Even though she's not known very well for this role, I gotta say she's definitely one of the best Toscas ever! And still this role was just a drop in the bucket for Sutherland! What an outstanding singer she is!

What a TREAT! Wow! Gobbi in COLOR!! Thanks so much for posting!! I have to join the chorus choosing Gobbi's Scarpia the best EVER - with all due respect to Raimondi, London et al. But the many pokes at Sutherland are overdone. Granted she is no Callas in this r�le (who was?) but that doesn't mean that she didn't do a great job and bring outstanding assets to bear in this excerpt. Thanks again!!

as always i cannot hear her lower register... truly badly supported...Beautiful Vissi d arte... At 8 37 she makes an awfully squealed off-tune sound before catching the high note... Sutherland not able to attack the note purely pffffffff perhaps she sould have made a small climax with a trill before the note I wonder why her husband didnt write such a retarded little ornament to help her attack the note! Gobbi is a God in this role... totally unsurpassed.

Anyway it is what you do with your vocal material that counts and he was really the male equivalent to Callas with what he did as he poured everything into his roles and was utterly convincing. It's a popular convention of 3rd-hand informed, armchair enthusiasts to refer to Gobbi as not having 'the best vocal material' - what a joke and what fools. But what's it to Gobbi? He was an awesome and magnificent opera singer. His performances are legend and he is the benchmark for all other singers, whatever the voice. This performance is superlative in it's interpretative style, intensity and musicality. His voice is utterly magnificent. Put simply - it doesn't get any better than this.

Possibly you are too young to have seen Gobbi live on stage? I assure you, from my many memories of him, that he truly was one of the greatest singing actors of the last century and a magnificent Verdi singer. His unique, unmistakeable voice, with its strong vibrato (and occasionally, I admit, marred by the famous and easily parodied Gobbi snarl) may not be to their taste. For me, however, it is a voice that I would give anything for to be able to hear live once more.

Try practicing 'oo' and 'ee' in pure falsetto. I have been doing this for a couple of years and can now sing up to G with ease (sometimes Aflat), when before I couldn't get above E. It stretches the vocal cords. You should never have to push or strain.

I, also, had the priviledge of seeing & hearing Gobbi's Scarpia & Giovanni at Lyric Opera of Chicago! We may have been there at the same performances! What a thrill! For me, Gobbi was the definitive Scarpia, just as Virginia Zeani is the definitive Violetta, in La Traviata! Gobbi and Zeani both inhabited their roles, and gave us many incredible performances! My friend the late George Papageorge used to tell the story about how Gobbi came to Atlanta with the Metropolitan Opera on tour - 1950's, 60's - to sing Tosca, and George was assigned to drive him back to his hotel after Scarpia is killed in Act II. As he was driving him, George says to Gobbi jokingly "Mr Gobbi, you are making miss the last Act! What happens in Act III?" To which Gobbi, without missing a beat, answered "I don't know, I've never stayed to watch!"

I was privileged to see Gobbi perform this role at least 7 times, including dress rehearsals. He directed two. No one has come close to him. Each role he sang was very different. This is my favorite scene in opera when sung by Gobbi. It is even more impressive when you hear the priests processing singing the Te Deum while Scarpia plots such evil things. In the performances I saw the way he said, "Scarrrrpia" was chilling. This not quite as evil sounding.

I have only ever seen and heard one singer that I thought brought off a better embodiment of the villainous Scarpia and that is Greer Grimsley. He's an amazing artist and with his size and overall look and the utter power and beauty of his voice he IS EVERY BIT the evil Scarpia. If you ever get the chance to see him in the role do it!

Unbelievable!!!! Nobody could be that perfect and that moving at the same time. That was both interpretively and technically the most brilliant rendition of this piece I have ever seen. Gabba2 has a version that will make you cry but this one blew my socks off. Gobbi understood the character of this music better than anyone who ever performed these roles.

She was the greatest belcantonista, and musician, and actress combined. With her, technique is invisible. Even her later work is better than singers who are in their prime. Viva callas! Amazing. i am crying from the power and truth of this, she married the musical note to the meaning of the word. She is sublime. A genius never to be seen again in this world.

To Goldie, 796824 and CrisRomeos, I am right with you with your comments. In an age when an overly forced vocal production was not the norm, such clarity and sweetly sinewous (sp?) singing was possible, especially from singers who were the best in the field, singing at their apex.

phenomenal coloratura, extremely accurate and secure with ability to sing in pizzicati even between syllables, with perfect diction and enormous colorising... not overloaded with retarded kilos of coloratura as most idiotic coloraturas would do... charismatic and beauuuuuuutiful... Unsurpassed for the centuries. Other singers havent even approached her Rosina and probably no one ever will

Can't believe this has negative comments on it, just listen to the range and coloratura that other "great" singers can even attempt on this duet on other recordings on here (Sills, Berganza, Bartoli). Everyone gets their own opinion, mine goes with Maria.

Thank you glenmed, this was very delightful. There is a certain chemistry always between these two. Callas was perfectly charming and certainly aware of how to sing Rossini. Gobi was surprisingly light and playful - Guess I got too used to his more dramatic forays. 4:20 onwards, Callas was utterly girlish - very rare and must be treasured.

If she had weak, unsteady, clumsy coloratura, then HOW on earth was she able to revive the bel canto operas? She could have never survived the demanding coloratura of Barbiere di Siviglia, Lucia di Lammermoor, or Anna Bolena if she had mediocre coloratura. "My god! Use your mind a bit!" as Callas had said.
