I could not believe the splendour of this movie it is really quite captivating. A sumptuous treat for the eyes. Some may call it over-the-top, even my Wife is bored with it but actually I'm rather glad I missed it back in the mid-`70's when it was released, I was too busy hitting the clubs, because now I can stay up watching it late into the night as though with a friend! IF there is more style here than substance, all I can say is ~ thank God for people like Kubrick who reach for the stars!

I thought the movie was pretty boring, but it was worth watching for the images and music. I like a lot of Kubrick's other work too, so it's not (I hope) that I "don't get it", just not my cup of tea.

I'm a young person, 15, and I listen to classical music regularly. All types. I particularly love Bach, Saint-Saens, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Ravel, Satie, Milhaud, Chopin, and Grieg. So, your stereotype is slightly inaccurate. :) I think the reason most young'uns are not like me is because they haven't been exposed to the right stuff. When they think of Classical, they think of Mozart's K 545, the Piano Sonata in C. Which, in my opinion, is one of the least captivating pieces I've heard.

I love Classical music but I won't be the first person to deny a lot of it is incredibly boring, personally I believe due to the fact that the pieces composers wrote for had to be so long and they had to fill it somehow, compared with 2/3 mins of 'packed-in tune' today. A vast amount is boring, this is what a lot of people hear, once they hear Beethoven or Dvorak, it will be appreciated, it happens when it's paired up with a film, just look at what happened to Chris Mansel's tune, gigantic!

well you ARE entitled you your opinion, but both of your arguments make no sense. the contrast between the pitches makes the viola stick out? ok that's wrong; the violin is brighter and higher in pitch so it naturally sticks out more (unless you have a great violist who, with talent, outshines the violinist). secondly, how does a "more technical part" make the viola stand out more? anyway, janine is good, i never said she wasn't. you just don't make sense.

J. J. is without question a superb violinist and this was executed beautifully..I thought just a bit tooo fast though...made me wonder if they were in a hurry to get to the potty or freezing. It was almost like "dueling banjos" Alex Markov has a really nice rendition with his Father which is just the right speed and Rachel Barton has an absolutely gorgeous version with a cello on her "Storming the Citadel" CD..though I still think JJ is a marvelous violinist!

This is an excellent recording! one of my favorites, but you'll have to forgive me DessayBestSinger, but I think that Dessay is not her land when she sings baroque music, I mean when you have read a lot of the period and have many teachers that are very interested in the performance with an Style period you realise that Dessay is really far from baroque style. (With this comment I don't want to say that she's not talented, she's one of the bests singers of our days)

Magnificent. And a lovely picture of our Emmanuelle. Thank you. I have never seen the male parts of chorus pay as much attention to a conductor! Though I think they were trying to stare down her cleavage lol! Emmanuelle specialises in voice and you can hear her coaching in all the singers here. As good a recording as you will ever here. I see from some of the comments that some people don't much care for baroque music, but, hey, they're the ones that clicked on this! Hell slap it in.

I don't get why people are getting so angry about the key here... It's a fact that Handel originally wrote it for bass, asides from that it's up to personal preference. Thanks for that. I have three versions of the Messiah, one of which is a reproduction of the original Dublin performance. These have two very different versions of this air, but both for bass, and I am surprised that it was rewritten for other voices, although I know that there is no truly definitive Messiah.

I also have a music degree-mine in is education however, but yes, this piece is 1) BAROQUE not CLASSICAL (I HATE when people use the label "classical" music for all music that includes baroque, classical, romantic, impressionistic but I digress) and 2) this is not the original key as it was intended to be a bass or baritone solo, I can't remember off the top of my head which 1. As a matter of fact, when Handel wrote Messiah, it was sung but a chorus of all men, even singing the soprano part

Because, oh, what a surprise...that is what Handel originally intended. Any basic research can tell you that. I think the fact that, as i mentioned above, i know the original key of the piece would indicate that i know something about music. Handel's Messiah is Baroque NOT classical anyway, so that shows what YOU know about it which is probably about jack shit nothing. i have a degree in vocal music performance and have sung all three hours of The Messiah several times. i know just a little bit about this stuff.

it is actually a transcription by wilhelm kempff, I've seen scores of his transcriptions, I'm sure you'll find it in one of them, minuetto by haendel. Idil is one of the greatest musicians living in the world, I wish she were known more and depth of her playing were understood better! I keep listening to her and everytime I realize a different detail on the notes.

This is definitely correct for the period, there is no question about that, yet I think there still could be more dynamic variation/contrast. He could also pay a little more attention to text - for example the word 'Iniquity' could be a lot more piercing - there's a reason Handel wrote the notes he did on that word. However, I do feel this illustrates why many people dislike "period" interpretations. It's no reflection on the listener or the artist, simply personal choices/preferences.
