Can't belive it!! 20 years ago I was there - on the climb of Alp D'Huez. Freezing my balls off as it was very cold and I'd just climbed te Col Du Glandon sweating my skin off to get there before the TDF arrived. It was worth every minute of suffering though just to witness Tour de France history unfolding.

The song in the video he recorded in a truck in France for the TV show. When he went into the studio to record the CD, he changed the song quite a bit. I have the original, and it is the same song.

Socalrider, this is epic! Thanks for posting. Cycling at its best...leaders actually chasing attacks, no "blue trains", or race radios. They may have doped too, but at least it doesn't seem as prevalent as the later Basso/Landis/Armstrong/Hamilton era. Riders actually had bad days back then. As a Canadian, the sight of 170 lb. Steve Bauer closing in on the leaders was one of the reasons I got into cycling.

Twenty years latter I still train to this, I have it on cassette. Does anyone know how to transfer cassette to CD is it possible.86,87,88 tour coverage will never be matched. It never grows old. Same with Roubaix coverage of those years. Does anyone know anything about the music they used for NBC coverage of the 1990 worlds there is Tesh and Yanni but I am trying to figure out the piece the last time up the climb when Rudy and Dirk drop Madiot.

Not sure if the song in question is from 'The Light Program". You can listen to snippets of each song at: emusic. They only give you 30 seconds and the songs are 14 minutes each. The only track I see progressing to any song on this video is Track4 (East West). if anybody does figure this out, A LOT of cycling fans would appreciate it.

one could probably find the CDs in a second-hand CD shop--Yanni's Celebration of Life, Reflections of Passion, and Chameleon Days. Tesh's Tour de France, Garden City, Live at Red Rocks, etc. and you can pick and choose the uptempo songs to ride with. (Tesh's Monterey Nights is number 1 for 'nocturnal' festivities)

The music was from the Tour de France soundtrack coverage from 86-88 by John Tesch. It was only released on cassette tape, but I transferred it to CD years back. I will look for it.

You're right; although I think that at times Hinault wasn't sure whether he was actually helping Lemond (as he said) or helping himself. In the end, whatever his intention, he was able to have his cake and eat it too -- he wore out the competition so that Lemond could lay down the final blow; he made Lemond prove that he really was the best that year; and he allowed himself to bow out like the tenacious champion he was. I wish we had more riders like him these days.

Actually, the Italians allegedly engineered just such a feat in the 1984 Giro, getting a TV helicopter to hover behind Francesco Moser in the final time trial so that he would make up time on (and win the race from) Laurent Fignon. No country has a monopoly on shennanigans.

amazing that this was the only coverage available to me as a kid. such an oversimplification of the tactics, as if Hinault, Hampsten, and Lemond were all attacking each other. Now, it is true that the Badger was probably not completely on board with helping Lemond as he had promised, but this day was a well-documented team tactic meant to string out the peloton and launch Lemond. and it worked.

Hinault was nuts -- attacking halfway through a mountain stage, even though he had nothing to gain and everything to lose. That's not how they race any more, which I sort of regret.

This is from the 1988 Tour. The riders have arrived at the beginning of the mountain stages of the race, this one beginning in the eastern region of France. The music that accompanies Phil Ligget's commentary is quite good but I wasn't able to locate the source so don't ask me where it's from. Again, this is from a 20 year old tape so it isn't the best quality.
