i love this, it looks like quite a mechanism driving that. there was an automaton in brighton lanes i used to see as a child, an old lady riding a bike. thats something id love to find. out of interest how much would an automaton like this set you back? thanks for posting this its appreciated!

Yes, a thin cord on a lever pivoted to block the fly, then the other end of the cord led around the end of the bed and tied to the childs big toe. Whenever the child turns over or moves the harpist plays. Thats how we did it.

You see, this is why I should never be a parent. I would TOTALLY put one of these right at the foot of my kids bed and let it 'play them to sleep' every single night. Umm...Are you sure you're not refering to the Gounod/Bach version of Ave Maria? (Back then just about everyone did a musical version of this ol' prayer) J.S. Bach would still have been pretty much forgotten during Schubert's time. It would be a few more years before Schumann and Mendelson would rediscover his work and bring it back to the public's interest, which makes me wonder about your claim that THIS piece is based on a Bach prelude.

Indeed Shubert created melodic line over the Preludium of J.S.Bach. At time it was used and was considered as Honor. Words are not the same of the latin pray: Ave Maria at all, indeed. It's just an Ave Maria ( that literally means from Latin: Hello Maria ) with words written by Shubert ;-)

The song was originally a poem from Sir Walter Scott epic poem The Lady of the Lake. In Scott's poem the "Lady of the Lake" & her father hide in a cave to avoid the vengeance of the King on their friend,who has been giving them shelter since their exiled.She sings a prayer to the Virgin Mary, calling upon her for help to protect her friend.

Saw this amazing talent in Lowell MA in July jamming w/assorted string musicians (think oud, hammered dulcimer, banjo + lap instrement from India whose name I cannot recall), he stole the show ! I know for sure that Britten wished for the old English poetry he used in CoC to be sung "so that the audience can understand the words." This from David Willcocks who went to Britten and got that answer from him, passing it along to me in the 1970s. My choir performed the work as a pageant, with costumes and banners, and staged by Robert H. Rogers. It is my fervent hope to re-create our CoC of the 1970s and make a video or film of it, so that others might see how wonderful it can truly become!

I imagine that as a former director yourself you are having an easier time than I catching their mistakes and understanding the corrections Mr Scott is making. For example why are they saying "quake" and "shake"?

It doesn't help that my camera stinks as a video camera and my recording was kinda haphazard because I didn't want to waste memory but I didn't always know when they were going to sing something worth recording. As for Britten: He's good, and there are a few of this works I really like CoC, but a lot of his stuff just seems odd to me, especially the parts of the operas I've seen, and almost out of tune even when done right. I wish I knew the technical terms to describe what I mean.

Sometimes I also think about for a long time, if I should post a video with a miserable sound quality. But these boys have fantastic voices ! Everybody can hear this and will join this video nevertheless. That is my opinion as a fan of Vienna Boys Choir.

Thanks for sharing these solo bits. These are NOT easy solos, as one can especially hear in the "That Y�nge Child" solo, which will expose, except in the best musicians, sharp (out of tune) singing. But then, this is rehearsal.

It's really good but the rithm it's not quite Joropo!!. Please search the genre a little bit more and you'll hear the difference. This music is melancolic. El Joropo it's much more agitated. Just an opinion here. But the music is good.
