Absolutely beautiful!! Way to go! Lord, if I get through some of Rameau's simpler pieces, I think I've done something. She's wonderful. I personally think the harpsichord revival of the 20th century is one of the happiest things that has happened in the whole history of Western music. There are just huge numbers of harpsichords around now.

If I remember correctly, there is another reason too. The soundboard is incredibly thin and actually has a dynamic response depending on the frequencies being pumped through it resulting in what is described for the very best instruments as a "swirling" sound. (Which would probably be hard to hear in any sort of low quality playback) Composers attempted to evoke that sound quality and it involves a pushing a lot of changing frequencies through the soundboard.

Harpsichords have no dynamic expression, so what you play as "loud" or "soft" on a piano would be impossible to distinguish on a harpsichord. The expression is found through tempo and tonal shifts, like punctuating notes, playing legato, things like that. That said, this piece would sound "OK" if you've played it on a piano before. Harpsichords tend to have a much lighter touch than pianos, though, so give yourself some practice if you plan to perform.

I disagree! I cannot execute GRADUAL crescendo or dimininuendo on a harpsichord, but I can create subtle dynamic changes as well as contrast. By subtle dynamics, I refer to articulation. I use articulation to bring out certain notes in the phrases. I don't utilize the harpsichord's contrast capabilities in this piece because I think it should sound powerful throughout. I promise to soon post some examples where I use the softer upper keyboard to create contrast.

Your assertion is correct in one respect, but completely off base in another, the harpsichord, while it has no dynamics, is actually quite soft, as opposed to loud. Several violins (about 3) can easily overpower a harpsichord, this sounds loud because it is the only instrument that is playing.

He can I think. You hit the keys the same way, but there are some composiitions which do not sound good on Harpsichord or on Piano. The main difference is in the method of making strings to vibrate.

Rexicano again talking - for the sake of nothing - against Galway in this Rampal video. He really must has a secret crush on Galway. This Rampal interpretation is too dry to me. I agree, he's very tense, and the vibrato sounds as if he's forcing his sound out with his face. His whole upper torso from waist up is so tense that it looks like a statue.. Unnatural. Especially the face.. Ouch! There is no way I'd see this as something to look for in playing music. No sir, I don't like it.

This is a big issue that professionals have been arguing over. It is not confirmed whether or not it was written by CPE Bach or JS Bach simply because no one had found the original transcript. Personally, I lean to JS because of a certain style [not really style, but I can't name it] unique to JS is in the first movement. However, he could have taught his son this [and if so, CPE learned it really well]. There is no way to confirm either side w/o the original.

I'll try, there are 3 ranks of strings, 2 eight foot and 1 four foot. The four sounds an octave higher than either eight foot. The two key boards. Each 8 foot is plucked at a slightly different place on the string, so they sound different and may also be different types of strings. The two key boards can be couple for different sound effects.

I agree, hence uploading it. Rinaldo brings a ton of passion and enrgy to this incredible masterpiece. I find alot of recordings of Bach tend to be stilted and boring, but Rinaldo brings his Italian fire to this music and truly brings it to life.

to glantz91 - my 1st comment is no way related to the BWV 1052 as far as I can read in it. In my 2nd comment I remark "when" and again no connection to this concert can be seen. Put aside this main point,it's a fact that you get Bach's greatness even in his easier works (and the BWV 1062 is not included in these easy beginners'works just to furtherly clarify). Period-

Ham ham ham, Simple technicaly!? Could you play perfectly even notes for twenty minutes, (rhytmicaly, metricaly, etc.)? And then comes the whole construction of the piece which should be made without disturbing the harmonical construction! And on top of that you are conducting the whole orchestra with your left hand continuo (the conductor has no place in a baroque concerto, although every time there's one!)

Yes, that music is by John Corigliano. It's in a style imitative of Baroque, but he's a modern composer. The pieces that he wrote for those sections are neo-baroque, but if you listened to the Red Violin album you'd find he uses many very modern styles, especially in the concert Chaconne on the main theme. He used a whole variety of historical styles in each of the pieces he wrote to suit every historical period that was explored in the film.

Sonata in c minor by Seixas played in Coimbra. This harpsichord was built in 2004 by the dutch harpsichord builder Titus Crijnen and it is a copy from a flemish harpsichord made by Ruckers in 1624.

By the way just to complement on this story Carlos Seixas is along with Francisco Ant�nio de Almeida one of the two most representative portuguese baroque composers. Unfortunatly most of his works were lost in the earthquake of 1755 nevertheless what has remained is enough to place him in the category of a true genious.

Actually, upon further research into the subject, it was the king's son Dom Antonio who arranged for scarlatti to instruct Seixas, but Scarlatti refused telling Dom Antonio that it was He who should be getting lessons from Seixas ("he" as in Dom Antonio).

Domenico Scarlatti and Carlos Seixas have met in Lisbon when Scarlatti lived here in Lisbon for 7 years. the story tells that the King asked Scarlatti to give Seixas lessons on harpsichord but Scarlatti refused telling the king that it was him who should take lessons ... I do not know if this is true or not but it is likely that they have influenced each other ...

Well, probably the "closest" harpsichord to play portuguese music is not this instrument. Maybe an italian instrument with just one keyboard and two 8 foot stops. Anyway there are lots of CDs with this music, portuguese or from other country. Just go to any CD shop specialized in classical music and you will find it. I see that you are from belgium, so in belgium and holland you can find lots of good shops with this music.

I love baroque music. Can you imagine how tedious it was to write all of those notes down on God-knows what kind of score paper was available then? And then the 'pens' they had to use! There was no 'standard' stationery or music papers in the 1600's or 1700's. Think about it. But these guys just kept writing. Geniuses will always push forward past obstacles.
