This is so awesome, and what amazes me is that these monsters and creatures are more enjoyable and real to me than the new computer graphics they use in the movies now. They actually have texture, and it's really there rather than just adding in some fake stuff over the real people. Great video.

my dad showed me this film when I was a child an it still remains just as impressive as it was back that. As impressive as cg has become it seems to miss something a realness to the scene. For it's time these are fantastic. Great movie an much better than it's remake.

I love the old films (I'm 35 so not from the era), the little character traits in the animation are wonderful, see how the skeleton skips to a stop at 4.38? :) How cool does that skeleton look against the ocean at 4.14? See him scoot over the wall at 4.22? with the little fencing skip :D It's wonderful! I really like the fact that someone's hands made these things possible.

best movie momment EVER! this is just so memorable, youl never forget this scene, the effects are wonderful, Harryhausen is the best when it comes to adventure like this! if anyone saw the copyed sequence from Spy Kids 2 with the cgi skeleton fight scence watch that, then this and youl see that the stop-motion is so much better that that cgi rubbish and this was done in the 60's!

CGI barely looks better than this (and a couple years ago it looked worse) and when you consider the incredible work and artistry it blows CGI out of the water. The more we can do with computers the more I forsee a return to practical effects. Because in the end, the artisty and effort will matter most. At least it will to some people..and a new sub-sect of film will be born.

I love the look of stop-action FX. It's so old school. Today's CGI effects just don't have the same ruggedness, and for me it just detracts from the movie. Yeah, I realize stop action is 'fake' too, but it brings back memories when I first saw this movie, so I feel like a little kid again.

Man, that is some sweet FX. They must have choreographed and filmed that scene with real stunt men standing in for the skeletons, then filmed it again for the heroes to mime the whole thing again against nothing. Those skeletons move more like stunt men actors than animation characters.

It is incredibly hard to believe that the only Oscar Harryhausen ever received was an honourary one, given to him by Ray Bradbury and Tom Hanks in 1992. He was soooo overlooked in his career.

"Clearly, your taste and intellect rises above your peers" Spielburg and many other filmakers as kids were very impressed by Harryhausen's work and learned from him. (Harryhausen did work in the first Star Wars.)

OKay, I saw Beowulf. I heard bad things. It didn't blow me away but I didn't hate it. It seems an odd choice to me that they took what is essentially a modern cartoon and made it adult oriented. My kids might have liked Beowulf, but I won't let them see it until they're older. For someone my age, a Harryhausen-style version would have been better, I think.

Remember seeing many of these films on telly when I was really young. There's an unreality about the effects that I found really disturbing at the time. It's used to a great effect that you'd never seen in today's CGI-laden blockbusters. Special effects with genuine character.

Good point. The technical aspects of CGI have far outpaced the artistry. The whole appeal of stop motion, as RH himself has pointed out, is that it is obviously "not real." There is an element of fantasy about it: you know it can't be real, but there it is. And because it's not something you can re-render over and over again, all the little nits and tics of the animator's manipulation are there on screen, only adding to the personality of the animation.

CGI will go the way of 3D. Ray Harryhausen is first and foremost an artist, not a technician. Just because you can use a piece of software, doesn't mean you have vision. Good on you, Karloff, for recognizing that.

I met Ray when he came to our university to give a speech. What a gentleman. He spoke to you as if you were his old friend. Sadly, there were many empty seats in the auditorium that night, yet when Michael Moore came it was standing room only. Really pathetic what our schools have churned out. Ray's work will far outlast that of the coward who stole his title.
