Anybody know anything about Raymond Leppard, the conductor? i really like his style,if everybody gets what i mean.he's a good conductor from what i can see,and i just like his jollyness =D as for Wynton, he's amazing like usual. his interpretation of this piece is remarkable, and truly worthy of reference to many trumpet tactics, especially his articulation i find. =D go Wynton! come back to classical! or at least play classical more than he does now.how much classical does he play now a days?

not the problem, even if we can point the finger at them. Historical wind instruments have very few technical limitations and I can assure you tuning is not one of them. and just like string players we can play any note with just intonation according to the key we're in. Natural brass instruments, with their built-in tunings, can bend notes too, to a far lesser extent, but they still sound a lot more in tune and better than modern brass.

Unless, of course, you use a cembalo universalis which has strings and keys for EVERY note with it's octaves divided into 24 parts;) Wind players aren't lazy or, oddly enough, incompetent. We like playing in meantone temperments because it's not only easier it sounds better. Unfortunately if we (period musicians) want to get paid we need to cater to the modern ears of our audiences and end up using valotti-like tunings which are closer to the equal side of things. Keyboards and keyboardists...

to be more complicated with winds, I don't know too much of the technicalities being a string player, but I'm assured that it is possible to use just intonation but that most players are too lazy or incompetent to do so. The result seems to be a sort of quasi-equal temperament (even with a lot of professional orchestras, mainly the largers ones) and when there is deviation from this it always seems to be that awful "leading notes should lead" philosophy which just destroys harmony.

I think this is why ensemble music is so much more expressive than keyboard music, as that freedom of intonation is retained, I like to think it was one of the reasons Weber abandoned keyboard continuo with his orchestra too, as he seemed to have a very sensitive ear for harmonic as well as timbral colouration. The problem is that strings have the freedom to use just intonation in whichever key they are in, and modulations aren't problematic as long as everyone is listening. However things seem

he was a clever man, but sadly, yes modern musicians who dont' know their way around temperments, pitch, and tuning don't know their way around their own instruments...which is why most people don't hire them and which is why i don't play with them LoLz! They were defintiely more aware of harmony and tuning pre-equal tempered composition. That was the whole point; every key, interval, harmonic progression/figure meant something and have it's own unique color.

Not true, in fact historical bassoons, and hautboys, are among the easiest instruments to play in tune. In fact all historical wind instruments are more in tune than modern instruments. Take it from a pro, I like being able to choose between A# and Bb. There's no excuse for bad players, though:P

You're right, but in this particular youtube recording, practically all I can hear on "Licht" is the timps. Anyway, it is just a rehearsal, so the mikes I'm sure aren't set up properly etc., so never mind. (My third favourite bit of word-painting is "war tod" in Der Erlkoenig - spooky. Oh yes, and "Barrabam!" in the St Matthew Passion. It's just a Dim7th, but it sounds harmonically weird.)

I just did that mass, fun stuff. As for the audience being able to understand: if the singers have good diction and good technique they don't need to be loud. Word painting is fun, isn't it?:D I love working with singers who listen and can adjust when they listen.

And yet that stormy section is, at the start at least, very simple, technically speaking. The melodic line doesn't contain many notes, and the bass is just arpeggiated chords providing a sustaining harmony. Ah, the best and most appreciable type of musical genius - genius in simplicity (not to suggest that he couldn't write complex, fugal stuff etc. when he wanted, for we know he could and did!)

This 3:18 to 5:10 section people mention, it's wonderfully Beethovenian isn't it? I mean, ofc we must appreicate Haydn as Haydn, but it's wonderful hearing areas that Beethoven possibly inherited and developed on (even if he claimed to learn nothing from haydn). In things like Haydn's symphonies too, you can also sometimes hear a flavour of Beethoven's sound (more often it's a Mozarty sound though! The equation = the Haydn sound!)

Mmm, that's the feeling that I get a lot of time, especially when trying to self-improve my own compositions etc. If I could compose, I would in a classical/romantic style, I'm not musically intelligent enough to make modern changes! Plus cos it's the type of music I love the most, not such a big fan of modern classical music. Unless it was music of great genius, it wouldn't be taken seriously because it would be old-fashioned, and not progressive, but there we are!

since it's classical music, not restricted by copyrights, anyone can record their own interpretation of the piece, and sell it. No, no... soloist sets the tempo. The conductor set the tempo for the Mozart you referenced, but not for solo works. Celloshoe isn't saying there's only one right tempo to play this at, but that it was the wrong tempo for him at this performance/time, and as another musician who also admires Rostropovich, I'm inclined to agree.

Mistakes all over and poor tuning? It's not just the big intonation errors, but little ones all over between the sixteenths... they're just all off. I really don't understand why everyone is voting down negative comments about this video. Is it just because of who he is, because his name doesn't make it a good recording.

I'm sorry. Even after looking at more of her work to try to get to understand her voice a little better, I still just don't like it. The registers in her voice (i.e. chest compared to middle compared to head) are so distinct that it sounds like two different people singing. And I know it's a little petty, but her facial expressions severely detract from her performances; it's almost as if one goes to her concert to see her contort her face rather than sing.

actually, the original that Hummel wrote was in E, not Eb. However, most ppl play it in Eb now because the Eb trumpet is so much more commonly used. Wynton Marsalis plays Hummel in E with an E trumpet

I've been playing the trumpet for 8 years and she's been my inspiration all along. I saw her perform in Glasgow earlier this year and met her before hand. She's such a genuine person and is a truly talented musician. I could watch her play all day - amazing tone and articulation. She makes playing the trumpet look so easy.

Oh! I'm sorry! Apparently my reading skills need some work. ;) I'm becoming more interested in composers of the classical era besides the big guys like Mozart and Haydn. Can you give me some recommendations? Also, do you have any Saileri albums? I've never heard his music before and he was supposedly very popular in his lifetime.

I think you have me confused with "Shnimmuc". His post states, "invented string quartet"...I am GeniusHaydn.....Well anyway, it doesn't really matter, Lately I have been listening to Vanhal's and Pleyel SQs. They are very excellent as well. I think Vanhal's are as good as Haydn's.

I never said Haydn invented the Sym or the SQ. I agree he progressed each to place where that hadn't been taken and opened the door for Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, etc. But as I study and listen to SQs, I always enjoy H's the most. I believe he wrote for the listener. They are very appealing.

Also, Haydn didn't invent the symphony or string quartet. However, he did develop both types of compostion further than anyone else. He published the first symphonies and quartets that became exceedingly popular.

I agree B's are not any better than Haydn's. In fact, H was more prolific than B while composing with equal or superior greatness. I like H's SQ's the seem more appealing than B's. B's are moody and sometimes dark.

Haydn acheived what few other artist in history did, that is to invent a form and bring it to it`s highest perfection, i.e. the string quartet. Beethoven`s late quartets are longer and more complex, but not necessarly greater. The new numbers for Haydn string quartets is 83, and the symphonies 107.

Mozart and Haydn worked and played together for a short time as well. Haydn was also an instructor of Beethoven. Haydn wrote over 100 symphonies and almost 80 string quartets.

More..More..During the Classical period, Haydn wrote some of the greatest String Quartets. However, musicians are just now discovering, recording, and realizing his genius. There were many fine composers in this time period, Cannabich, Ordonez, Kraus, Richter, Stamitz. Haydn, Mozart, Vanhal and Dittersdorf played SQ's together on a couple of occasions. These are the pioneers of SQ's. There are a couple of CDs of Vanhal and Dittersdorf SQ's, they are very excellent as well.

Haydn wrote an early D major concerto that shows a pretty limited knowledge of the cello. Once he started working at Eesterhazy, he had a superb young cellist in house named Joseph Weigl. I think it is definite that Weigl helped with the writing of both concertos, because each is very cellistic and worlds more advanced than Haydn's early D Major. I don't think Anton Kraft could ever have written the d Major. He just didn't have the creative spark that permeates that great work.
