Thank God for YouTube! Love this place!

It takes a bit of time to strip the #12 gauge house wire, and straighten it, but, it is worth it. Love making things that have excellent utilitarian value! Make them for your friends. They will never forget you regarding the analogue to digital transition.

Really everyone, this design rocks! Ran out of room on the last post but, just wanted to say you cannot go wrong with this design at all. My savings for my efforts tonight, $160.00. I hung my antenna on the wall. Not pretty but, it way works. If you are keeping up with the Jones'es, then you could mount it in your attic. Thank goodness I do not have that problem.. It is all about survival for me. Just put in a wood stove to. Life is good. Stove top cast iron cookware rules! Thanks again.

God bless you! Wow, this thing works great! I am getting 18 channels perfectly clear and the audio is even better than my pre-amplified rabbit ears! I made two of them this evening in no time. I took one extra step than this person did, I actually used #12 gauge electrical house wire and soldered my v 14" parts to the the main copper wires that hook up to the 75 ohm transformer. Heck I even soldered the 75 ohm transformer in while I was at it. I wanted to get all I could out of my connections.

you lose alot of gain putting it behind the tv there...
By: canadiancowboy1956. on 07 Jan 09, 22:17:42
Read about it last night and built it today. Works great! Made mine with a strip of pine and some leftover suspended ceiling wire (strong like bull). Jumped the wires over each other at the crossings. Mounted it near a basement window in a house 24 miles southeast of Detroit in Canada. Pulled in 12 analogue and 15 digital - some of which are HD. Good Project!

can anyone assist me? i made the antenna in this video, to the exact specs, using the same materials. it looks exactly like his. i plugged it into my DTV set top box and did a channel search. it did not pick up any extra channels, and the signal strength improvement was negligible. i am not sure what the problem is. i tried different coax cables, and longer ones. i tried repositioning the antenna, and even put it in 2 windows on opposite sides of the apartment. still no joy. :/

What HDTV Tuner do you reccomend?
By: swishseven. on 06 Jan 09, 18:05:12
I built this only to lear that my "HDTV" (label on the TV) does not have a built-in tuner. I'm new to this. What external HDTV Tuner should I conisder? I don't have a lot of money. I've seen prices ranging from 150 to 400. Would a $150 box do the trick? Can I go cheaper? My TV is a Polaroid FLM-3201. Thank you.

If you're near the US border (like in Vancouver), there are ATSC signals being transmitted and the major nets are doing their trials right now.
By: diggingforgold. on 04 Jan 09, 04:12:43
FCC wants to free up the valuable frequencies that are currently used by old analog stations. US companies bid on freed up frequencies. It's all about re-allocating frequencies.
By: updowns511. on 03 Jan 09, 01:07:26
Conventional analog TV uses a lot of band width that digital TV will free up for lots of other applications.
By: jdn74. on 02 Jan 09, 05:58:17
For those of you who may live further from the TV station than the guy in this video, this antenna works even better if you mount a wire mesh or foil behind it and get it outside up in the air. This will make the antenna even more directional as well.
By: jdn74. on 02 Jan 09, 05:49:57
You might consider a whats called a "folded dipole". Find out the frequency of the lowest channel that you need and then design the antenna based on that. Feed impedance is 300 ohms, so you'll still need a 300 to 75 ohm matching transformer (balun) just like the one used in the video above. Good luck.

"Since when is the government so concerned about the visual quality of our televised entertainment" TV is the one thing most culture pockets in the US have in common, people also think it is an accurate portrayal of the outside world so it helps them tell us what they want us to think and be aware of.
By: Khaliyl19. on 02 Jan 09, 03:13:11
Why is the government so anxious to help American citizens experience a clearer and more highly defined television picture? Does that make sense to you? Since when is the government so concerned about the visual quality of our televised entertainment that congress would pass an undebated statutory proclamation which mandated that the HD conversion take place on 2-17-09 and and then subsidze about 90% of the associated cost?
By: RestlessJatt. on 02 Jan 09, 00:41:43
But this is free. Rogers can cost up to 80 bucks a month.

My UHF phased array coat hanger antenna works great on the UHF DTV stations (526-820Mhz). Unfortunately we have more DTV stations in our area on VHF (45-230Mhz), than on UHF. So I need an indoor antenna that is strong enough to pull in both VHF and UHF DTV stations approx 20-25km away. Is there such an indoor antenna ??? or has anyone added VHF elements to this UHF coat hanger phased array that works ? By the way, I tried the old "Rabbit Ears" for VHF but performance was rather poor.

By: mpt01420. on 29 Dec 08, 01:37:27
Built this today - works great! About $10 in materials and maybe an hour of my time. I ended up using 14 ga. galvanized wire instead of the coat hangers but it still worked fine. Local HD channels come in stronger than the analog.
By: crzyshine. on 29 Dec 08, 01:17:47
I made one today, it works better then the power antenna I had from radio shack.I think the digital signals being sent out are just weak, maybe the tv stations will increase the signal as time goes by. But this little antenna does help....Thanks!
