as far as i know it goes back to some war between england and france, the english had their longbow archers, which gave the french a very hard time.when they were captured the french would cut off their righthand forefinger and middle finger, to keep them from shooting a bow, but also to humiliate them and it became a habit amongst the archer to stretch out those two fingers when facing the enemy to show that they could still use their bows and kill the enemy...

1984 was written as a satirical warning against militant totalitarianism. Not so much against any form of Marxist government. Orwell actually described himself as a "democratic socialist". The true issue he is pointing out in '1984' is man's increasing willingness to throw away freedom in exchange for safety and being part of the 'herd' in society. Orwell felt that ultimately humans would not be able to cope with their own destinies

Julia had been sleeping with "scores" of party members & it wasn't like Winston was so apparently joyful at the system...I think GO wanted to show enough of the romance to get us outraged at its destruction, even if Charrington and the Thought Police could have been on it in an instant. The soundtrack on the DVD version of this film is all wrong...even though I think the Director himself may disagree, I truly believe that the Eurythmics soundtrack works better at conveying the nightmarishly surreal atmosphere that Winston lived in. That's why I gave away my DVD & burned one from Cinemax (still widescreen) with the Eurythmics track (which, BTW, was the one that many had gotten used to since it was on the old VHS release). People shouldn't change soundtracks of films,

Not worth it. The proles were already docile and posed no threat of rebellion. Realistically, though, despite what O'Brien will later say, this system is ultimately doomed to collapse. The pursuit of power and control for their own sakes is as corrupting as any other end, and throughout the book there are signs that the Party is far more corrupt than its public image suggests. I'd say North Korea is the best example of 1984 IRL, and as we can see even its hold on power is weakening.
