Thank you for posting this. My school, Shorter College plays this as the processional song at our graduations. It certainly makes you feel proud to hear this as you go marching in to receive your Degree. I'll be getting my 3rd and final degree at Shorter next week. Nobody plays this tune as well as the 'Royal Irish Regiment' I've heard it played by Germans (who wrote it), Scottish (who it was wrote for) and bands from all over the world. They just don't make it sounds this way

I have been receiving some many messages ask where did I find the music. I am apologizing that I could reply to you guys ASAP. Here is my answer to all of you. Thank you for all the great comments and please keep enjoying the music. I downloaded the music from neapster. It is performed by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in Album named " Highland Cathedral". There is another version in the album named " Spirit of the Glen. But I prefer the version in "Highland Cathedral".

That's the clue, your brother wrote the version for the RSDG, that Regiment made Highland Cathedral a part of scottish military music tradition. The original civil bagpipe recording was made in 1982 by Korb and Roever, before RSDG knew it. It was a single, produced in Germany by the two from own money. So as I wrote, he made ONE of the pipe scores, but not the FIRST one. It was Angus McDonald who introduced it with his collection to the public. The original Highl. Cathedr. is a german product.

There is no "IF" I can assure you, he did!! There is no mention of him because at the time he was with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, and sadly for reasons I cannot disclose, a member of this regiment took it upon himself to take the glory ,which is found in their Regimental Disclosures of Pipe tunes!!!

You may be right, but no scotsman is given as co-worker in the sources. And you write of THE man. Korb and Roever are two persons. So please understand my doubts. ;-) If your brother made the pipe scores , very well done. Let's call him the unknown hero. Anyway, I fear nationalists would call it not suitable as anthem because of the german composers, even if the pipoe score came from a scotsman. And that's what I expressed. In my opinion it would be perfect.

Actually just to put you right...the composer in question was actually in Edinburgh at the time and while there, went to Edinburgh Castle with his new composition looking for a piper to put a pipe score to it . My brother was that Piper !! So he was the FIRST piper to put the score together.

He may have put together one of the many pipe scores , but the original one came from Michael Korb who composed it together with Ulrich Roever. Korb was teached by Paddy Atkinson and other famous pipers. No mention is made in any official source of a genuine scotsman taking part in the making. Oh, and I love Highland Cathedral it's so scottish by heart.

If you want it to stay in Scotland, then come over here, pick up everyone of Scotish decent and bring them back. There's a reason this stuff is over here, so there must have been a pretty good reason for them to leave Scotland in the first place. I myself have done highland dancing as my mom's side is Scotish, so I am not just an outsider bashing for the heck of it. As for American dances - they have natives stupid.

I personally think that Scottish Highland Dancing should be in Scotland and not anywhere else in the world. We are proud of that, dont dare think we don't care that it is revolving around the world. There are no swords, because there is a bunch of girls doing pastiches of and aggressive mens dance, bizzare. Certainly NOT highland (Scotland) Dancing, interesting sport though. No one ever danced like this Highlands of Scotland. Strange to think why girls are doing pastiches of traditional mens dance, I don't see any men doing any type of traditional womens dance of Scotland.

Mmm, I wouldn't say the lyrics are "on par with poetry," but they're darn good. To be nitpicky, I would say the hook "it's either sadness or euphoria" is a little vague after the detail and flow of each verse. You have to understand, though, this is a tiny criticism. Billy Joel has long been, BY FAR, my favorite "popular" artist (as opposed to "classical" artists like, say, Mahler), and I think this is one of his strongest albums. For a while, years ago, this was my favorite song on it.

The english regiments had a input in inventing pipes and Drums, before this the scottish regiments only use to have eight pipers and no drums, where as the English regiments had fife and drums. It was during a battle when the Gorden Highlanders were marching down a road playing the pipes, when English drummers started to beat to the tune, and hence the idea was formed,this is why drummers in pipe bands often wear the red scarlet tunic of the English
