Remeber being 11 years old in secondary school and there was a poster of Susanna Hoff (Bangles era)on the wall of my humanities class. When you're a boy was dog food. She admits this herself. Stating that Columbia wanted to push her sexpot image....it didn't work and made that album was weak. Which is a shame, because if they had marketed her properly, she would have probably pipped Sheryl Crow to the post. Played the 'Ex-lead singer of the Bangles' card far too often. This 1996 self titled album was a 100% upgrade on the 1st. You just got to look at the artists/musicians that worked on the project to see that. V underrated.

Quite the contrary, because her voice is emotional & vulnerable - it actually contrasts with the instrumentals & pops out even more & makes it more interesting. Just because you don't appreciate it doesn't mean 'her voice is not strong enough for rock' as you put it. After all she is posted here right? Praise who you like & ignore who you don't, but don't for one second believe your opinion has any weight or authority - cause it doesn't.

You're wrong, though. The second record is in every way superior to the first. Susie's biggest weakness has always been her songwriting, so on the second disc she hooked up with David Baerwald and Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse to not just write good songs, but challenging ones as well. Getting Jon Brion and Petra Haden to assist in the studio didn't hurt,e ither. "Beekeeper's Blues" is the best song she's ever done.

EXACTLY! That's what made Brooke White the best singer on this season of American Idol--hands down. In fact, she has a lot in common with Susanna on this front--a voice that is raspy, warm, unusual, distinct. Both of them don't sound like anybody else out there in the music world, which is pretty amazing given that there are literally tens of thousands of singers flooding the airwaves, internet, etc. People like Ann Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Susanna--they are cut from singular cloth.

As much as I love Susanna, I think the second solo album is not nearly as good as the first. She tried to rock out more, but unfortunately the songs just aren't that great. She wanted to distance herself from the first LP, which she felt was too "banglish," but in her effort to rock out, she neglected to write catchy songs. The second album was a big let-down for me and I hardly ever listen to it anymore. The best song on it is Ian Broudie's! What does that tell you?!

Susanna Hoffs is one of my 10 favorite singers of all time (others: Roberta Flack, Paul Young, Mark Hollis, Stevie Nicks, Ronald Isley, Donna Summer, Toni Childs, Tina Turner, Ann Wilson). I love how her voice is sweet, raspy, a little nasally. No one sounds remotely like her. I got to meet her after a show @ Bethpage Theatre in NY when this album was out & she was a sweetheart. Plus, the most gorgeous eyes in the history of rock! My favorite solo recording of hers is "Wishing on Telstar."

As best I can figure it's cuz that was the age of the angry girl or diva. If you look at what the massive hits were, it's Celine, Dion, and early angry Alanis + some Sheryl Crow. Sheryl's not angry but has a lot more bite to her sound than Susanna. So I'm guessing Susanna's voice was too sweet while her sound wasn't raw enough. But they did play this song on a local station and I loved it. We all have faves and mine are Beekeeper's Blues & Stuck In The Middle With You. They got no play.

Very nice, better than her recorded version of the song. But is it really better than Ronstadt's original way back when? Not really. They are both good. Hoffs has a more limited vocal range than Ronstadt, plus Hoffs is pushing 50 and LR was around 20yrs old when she recorded it, thus the performances have a different feel. But well done. Kudos' to Hoffs.

All people have to talk about is Matthew's weight. Sure he has gained a lot and would be healthier if he would lose some but he still can sing. I saw him in the early 90's in Charlotte, NC and he was great live. How many of the new bands really sound good live. The majority of new artists require a lot of help in the studio to make them sound good. The music industry sucks and all the record companies are worried about is which cookie cutter artist they can promote this month and make some money

By the way, IABOY4444, all of the Monkees EXCEPT Davy were musicians prior to the show, only Micky was aguitarist, not a drummer, but leared to play drums so they could tour. Also, the reason the songs were predominatly by other people was becuase Don Kishner had creative control over their music and wouldn't let them write/play on the albums. the thing is, they wanted to go for self expression more than record sales.

actually, he was, and still is, kind of a musical prodigy, and could play just about any instrment he picked up. He was also classically trained and rejected pop/rock music when he was very young and only gained a love and respect for it later. as for "looking at the old clips" there you're seeing the Peter Tork character and not Peter himself. There is a HUGE difference between the two. as a matter of fact, he was the only one playing a character that was nothing like himself.
