This is an absolutely wonderful animation! The story, the flow of the plot, the details of the environment, and the character depth that are encompassed in this short piece is nothing short of amazing. What a storyteller this animator is, capturing all that is sweet in the interaction of youth and innocence with age and imagination. One thing I don't understand is the origin of the title, "Hugh". More videos like this please!

No one forced these migrant workers to get on the "Coal Train". Most of the workers from outside SA are illegal, they take the jobs from bonafide SA citizens. I grew up in white SA. You are probably right. Seems that I have heard that parts of Southern Africa, and in Western African continent, or Congo they still enslave men and boys to work in streams to pan for diamonds. There was a recent movie with Sean Penn in it about the poliltical continuing problem. They steal boys and men from their villages under pressure of gun barrels to work for their corrupt cartels who likely pay off the local governments. Many have such difficult lives.

I think it's fairly sad how our scope of music is generally limited to artists we hear about in America and the big names in Europe and how we don't realize just how vast music is in general. Who would ever have heard of Hugh Masekela and all of these other musicians if Paul Simon hadn't publicized it? And they're only 0.00000001% of the actual music out there.

Hugh's performance is amazing. He didn't have to try to keep your attention- he simply does. It's gripping and facinating. Where Barrowman's performance is filled with constant and repetitive arm and hand gestures, Hugh does not need them other than to emphisize certian moments. His fantastic voice and facial expressions carry the song a little better than Barrowman in my opinion.

Never heard of Barrowman so I had a look at his version to compare. Vocally not a lot between him and Hugh - tho Barrowman might have the edge, but dramatically - Hugh takes the cake. Hugh's version is gripping and intense. I found myself drifting off during Barrowmans while Jackman kept me glued to the vid. Well Barrowman makes this song into a cheesy showstopper by trying to show off his voice, whereas Jackman actually acts it and makes the sacrifice of sounding not as good as he could in order to retain the believability of the character. Jackman's performance is raw and realistic, I love it.

I saw this in Brisbane. It was the BEST musical I had ever seen live, I had even seen Hugh when I was very young and he did the beauty and the beast in Sydney, but still... this was amazing. We all saved so much money for the near front row seats. Best performance ever. :D Stevie Wonder came a close second in terms of my concerts though. :P
