I am in the Air Force. IED's don't always get detonated. The way most of them work is you run over something in the ground that detonates it. Alot of times these terrorists will get garden hose and put two pieces of metal in that connect to a battery thats wired to a bomb. When the vehicle runs over the hose the 2 pieces connect connecting the circuit and boom. The hose is hidden underground.

Actually, that bomb was an advanced device with a molten slug that you can see BEFORE you even notice the road rising from detonation. Freeze frame between 6 to 7 minutes to catch it at the top of the frame. The device was not too deep. Had it been under a vehicle -- even a tank -- it would have torn right through it.
