A lot is down to Jony Ives too who designed it and every Apple product since, and their engineers who managed to get all this into a single unit like this. Jobs is just a great PR man and his passion inspires his staff to do their best, and it shows.

IBM couldn't reduce the power consumption and heat generation enough to put their G5's into a notebook without compromising massively on performance, so Apple went to Intel who offered them the best "performance per watt" option, plus they had the added bonus of being able to run Windows and most other OS's natively on the x86 platform which made them more appealing to switches, or people who liked the hardware but still wanted to use Windows.

i guess so but thats a $2400 upgrade. On a pc you can do that in chunks, $400 monitor $150 video card, and a few hundred processor, rather than $2000 abouts every 2 - 3 years. thats the advantage of PCs. I guess i am just more a PC guy than an Mac or iMac guy.

The original mac's were ok, but I think they would look a lot better made of traditional materials. Still, it was a very smart move separating Apple from the rest of the competition and targeting younger buyers. My favorite mac will always be the g4. :)

Actually Mac OS X uses ram much more efficiently than Windows. Plus PCs deteriorate in speed within months. If you buy a $400 PC laptop, it's gonna be great on first use, and then within a month it's a piece of shit. Macs are made with parts that are built to run together, so that this doesn't happen nearly as quick. Macs outlast PCs 10:1.

If you can live without Mac OS, you probably should. Go with the Studio XPS if you wanna go prebuilt. It has Core i7, which is Intel's latest and greatest desktop CPU. Also, a tower PC like the Studio XPS is far more upgradable then an iMac. You're gonna want/need more RAM and a better vidoe card at some point, and not only does the XPS have better options stock, but they can also easily be upgraded later. Just my 2 cents

lol is there such a thing as a good PC? you have to really understand how incredibly simplistic and smart Macs are - space saving, stylish, clever, easy to use, never breaks, never goes wrong and OSX is the best OS ever invented. I got one so I could play an old copy of Diablo that only works on OS 8 & 9. Then I put Linux on it. Now it serves as my primary hacking tool, and I must say that it beats that PC from 2000. Mabye not in speed, or storage space, but its much more compact and it doesn't even have a fan. Its easy to set up (just plug in your keyboard, mouse and ethernet) and it looks pretty too :P

And the Xbox 360 may exceed at what it does, gaming, but the PS3's Cell wins with flying colors in FPU operations (the Xenon is simpler than the G5 and Cell). Wrong again, the imac uses a mobile graphics card commonly found in laptops, you cannot upgrade the graphics. The Xbox360 when released could outperform anything apple had. As of now, the 360 is still a force to be reckoned with and the macpro is the only thing that can beat it. Also since you think the wolfdale chip is a "desktop only" chip, whats the difference between 45nm Wolfdales and 45nm Penryn's? both are identical except one days Laptop and one says Desktop, but there is one difference! the Penryn although identical can run at a much lower wattage. So with that being said mac going with the wolfdale instead of the Penryn allows them to save money, charge you more, and their product becomes much hotter. 2 bad it doesnt have a %@#^#^ G5 in it! the xbox does

Okay, you think you are so smart eh? Whats the difference between a laptop cpu and a desktop cpu? The only difference is that the laptop cpu's are the best of the bunch. They are able to keep high clocks at lower voltages other than that they are identical to their desktop counterparts. As far as memory and hard drive those have been changeable in laptops since laptops came out yes even apple laptops. Ask any overclocker, they pay more for a laptop processor for their desktop.
