We 'merkins have screwed up the word even worse than that! Americans don't call it gasoline, we just say "gas". Like, how do we distinguish it from, say, farts, or helium, or ... I think the name Gasoline came out in America about the time, in the previous century, when America was the single country largest consumer of gasoline, which also coincided with America having the most weapons of war PLUS money. All those things made the word "gas" stick.
