Im actually fifteen, and I play guitar, which seemingly adds the hippie factor, but I'm pure republican. It was all because of my father. He teaches me a lot about politics, and backs it up with facts, just like ST0PandL00k. tells me what good is remembering key dates if you don't ask "Why?" what causes these good and bad events?

Yeh i know that there are variations with Austrlian spelling compared to the U.S. However it is spelt 'labor' when applied to a political party. For eg the Australian Labor Party. I know so because my politcal and legal teacher had once emphasised on this. Though when you apply it to hard work then that is spelt as 'labour' :)

Baseball has rules and umpires as life has laws and government. I agree with you that complexity is the rub. However, may I suggest that life is beyond complex indeed is chaotic. The beauty of the chaos is that we individuals, doing our own thing, under the laws of the land, increase each others quality of life unknowingly and in most cases uncaring. Caring and knowledge of consequence is of no consequence. The end result, the consequence of betterment for all, is the only measure of success.

I think your example is flawed because baseball is a controlled environment. Life isn't a controlled environment. I'm not arguing in favor of one or the other. Then, to my way of thinking, the pitcher's legacy is enhanced. Would he/she be admired more or less for the sacrifice made for the team? Again, to my way of thinking, everybody wins. The individual and the individuals IE the team. Unfortunately, it's a difficult concept for many of us to understand in this narcissistic culture that we have developed. The thesis that there is a conflict between group and individual goals is false. The simplest example I can give is of a baseball team. Each player has individual goals and team goals. The stronger individuals on the team serve their self interest by doing their best in order to fulfill their goals thereby increasing the success of the team and ultimately improving the conditions of the weaker individual team members.

Culture is separate from government. I am glad you acknowledge that. The video is not about politics. Its about how ppl relate to other ppl in different societies. This is often very far removed from what the political leader is doing (ie I think the current Pres of the US is an idiot, but that doesn't affect how I relate to my fmily and neighbors. Individualism and its corollary values does a really good job of explaining which values you can see play out in people's lived experience.

I acknowledge the fact that you are talking *cultures* here, but when discussing individualism versus collectivism, more relevant are discussions involving degrees of involvement of the *State*. There is not a direct correlation between collectivist cultures and collectivist governments. If anything, it's an inverse relationship, that is actually proportional to developmental level. The "collective" has NO natural rights, responsibilities...you cannot violate the "rights" of the collective. The collective cannot commit a crime or be put in jail. The collective is an idea. When you protect the rights of the individual, all are protected. When you only respect the rights of certain groups, only those groups are protected.Also collectivism as a world view is ineffective at giving us a full understanding of our nature. For instance, All males are heterosexuals. Thats not true. some people are bi, gay, or even asexual. Collectivism is used as a tool to understand the masses, not as a tool to understand everything. Can't much take pictures of places I haven't seen. I am aware of Sweeden and I appreciate that you mention it here. There are going to be a lot of countries I missed. I've only been to 22. And at the time of this video (2004), it was fewer than that. Sweeden is on my list of places I have yet to see.

I think you forgot to mention Sweden in the list of collectivistic countries. Ruled by social democrats for most of the 20th century, and still a free market and 30-33% income tax for the benefit of the collective. Ponder it. Sorry, just that you mostly showed deformed people and ghettos while talking about the collectivistic countries.
