I've read the book "Natural Capitalism." It's really great. Every time I watch the news, or even big name economists on shows like Charlie Rose, I'm left banging my head against the wall. The model laid out in the book could save our economy and our environment at the same time, without resorting to a bloated government.

Is there any use for a 1 GB HD? Unless you are making a vintage PC or are designing an application-specific device where you don't need 250 GB or so of capacity, then what's the use? If you're going to use a 1 GB HD in a USB enclosure, you should just buy a 1 GB flash drive. And, if the drive is old enough, its reliability is suspect, eliminating its trustworthiness for data storage; even if the drive board is still good, the low-level formatting on the platters can fade over time.

3 terabytes of data storage is not any good if it's not reliable. Those drives were probably being destroyed because they were used up and worn out. If you don't shred them, they're only good for paperweights or setting yourself up for a serious data theft liability. They may or may not contain sensitive data that necessitated the destruction of the drives, but this is the best way to break them down for recycling to make new drives.

And that's assuming the drives weren't first hit with a demagnetizer, which will wipe out the low level formatting. If you wipe out the low level that writes the sectors on the platters, then you'll have also wiped out the high level formatting, which is where the data is kept: effective erasure. Forensics can only go so far to gather info that's usable. A shredded drive will have no usable, retrievable data because there's no way you can put it back together again in exactly the right order.

If you can even manage to read anything off the pieces, all you'll get are a jumbled mass of binary digits that mean nothing unless you put everything back in the right order, which you'll never be able to do considering the extremely small scale all those clusters and sectors are made to on the platters.

I disagree with that. I do not think that education is the main reason why people fail to face the needs of our time. I rather believe that our surroundings take a much bigger part in it. All this stupidity being spread throughout the nation and we begin feeding our childing with this stuff at a very early age... I know this strike will probably put a bit more work on your desk since the damage is at the point were I don't think the lease will cover it and we probably bought this one, but it helped four soldiers walk away relatively unharmed. At least the German Army and KMW can take comfort in the fact that the kit works and does save lives even if I did write off a tank. Thanks again sir and your work on that end is truly appreciated. Nuff said.

Unfortunately we didn't all walk away unharmed, my driver broke his left hip, but the fact that most of us only suffered bumps and bruises and ringing ears is testament to how well the new tanks function. This was our second IED strike in six weeks and much bigger than the first and only through sheer luck we were travelling in a Leo 2. I'm certain that we wouldn't have fared as well in another vehicle.
