This man is pure genius. I agree with MeritMaestro - Paganini took violin playing out of the 'parlor' and gave it pizzazz. I always like to say that Nicolo 'deflowered' the violin :)

I cannot say truly. But none of them really reflect me. I would prefer becoming a high Master myself. But I really do admire menuhin quite a lot, and sarasate, from what I've heard of him.

Reply to Martin 067..an interesting question! Which virtuoso would you want to play like IF given that chance!!! I think I would want to play like Milstein although certainly I would not choose the opportunity to be as gifted as any of them!!! I also greatly admired the style of Francescatti and certainly Perlman! I would not refuse the talent of any of the high Masters!

when you meet him he's a nice person despite his brilliance--some geniuses (like Brahms) become arrogant and jerks, but not Perlman. I got his autograph and shook his hand :) Furthermore, before hearing him, I thought it must suck to have bum legs like his. After I heard him play, I remembered thinking that I'd trade my legs for that ability in a heartbeat.

I am a violin student, and I went to see Maestro Perlman perform live last year when he came to perform at Eisenhower Auditorium at PSU. The tickets were $65 which is amazingly expensive in my town, and I remember leaving thinking that it was worth every penny. He has such an amazing stage presence, and introduced each piece individually with historical context, and he's a really funny and brilliant man. His stage presence is amazing, and the best thing about him is that [comment continued next]

Hi TheLampie, Thank you for your comment, that I compared them. Indeed, in the solo part (5:18-34), Heifetz's interpretation is so deep, beyond comparison. But, it seems that Perlman put more emphasis on the part before the solo (4:49-5:18), which is breath taking, too.

Certainly composers of the 20th century demand more technical ability from orchestral string players, but this doesn't mean that the music before the 20th century gets easier and easier the further back you go. Try playing Biber. You might have to play in a scordatura - there's something almost no orchestral string player can do today, which Biber didn't even need to mention at the start of his sonatas. And your double stops need to be quite good to play four voice polyphony...

Your mistake, which you will learn when you find out about historical performance, is that you think playing the notes on the page of a vivaldi score - which I admit is easy to do - is accomplishing what Vivaldi's orchestra would have done with those notes. First of all - Spring - I doubt very much your orchestra is playing it the way music was played in Vivaldi's time - Italians were famous for taking very fast tempos, making huge contrasts between forte and piano, and importanty, improvising a great deal in the solo parts. The average highschool violinist can get through a corelli sonata, too, but that doesn't mean he plays the sonata the way it was played back then. A great deal of vitruosic embellishments were improvised in anything soloistic.

there was bassist working with a chamber group that i was in that also did that. i assumed it was a technique the the lower strings used but i guess it also works on viola and probably violin. i think it works by somehow vibrating the pitch as it resonates through the body of the instrument. i don't know why i haven't tried it when i first saw it, but now after seeing this i think i'll go try it.

I thought it was the other way around? The Guarnerius violins are the ones which make the explosive sounds (i.e. Cannone Guarnerius was well known for it's incredible power, and it was Nicolo Paganini's personal violin) where Stradivarius violins make the brighter, warmer tones (such as the Gibson ex-Huberman, which Joshua Bell currently plays). I suppose it's possible that the two separate makers made violins which produced either quality.

I'm taking a guess that it is the Sauret Guanerius because it has a warmer, muted sound and guanerius's are famed for their collected warm sound and Strads are famed for the explosive power they provide. See the Cannonball Strad.

that is sooooooooooooo sooooooooooo wrong. because first of all it's not just "holding" a bow. perfecting it takes a lifetime. just like it's not just plucking a guitar string is it? because that seems like cake but i bet it's not is it? plus guitarists don't have to worry about a bow, that just use their hands so there's less to deal with.

I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but this video doesn't show Perlman at his most passionate. True, any violinist should be proud of this performance, but it isn't satisfying to me because it just seems like a perfunctory performance of his--like he's played this a thousand times (which is probably close to the truth) and he has everything down but he wasn't into it 100%. Wrong. To perfect usage of the right arm and the bow is something that takes a lifetime to achieve, much like perfecting proper usage of a guitarist's right hand. There's really no comparison as both are extremely difficult to master and can take a player his/her entire life to do so.

Well, a guitarist's right hand takes years and years of practice to develop and in terms of skill required,(say, for picado or tremolo) it's much more demanding than holding a bow. Frets be damned.

and the old should remain in the past where they belong and not in the future which belongs to the youth. I too take great offense to this comment. I have a 4.0 and am at the top of my class. I believe that the voice of the youth should be listened to (but not ALWAYS counted). with out the youth we have no future and the youth need to be taught that they have a very strong voice.
