I believe Philip Glass is the savior of modern music (one of them anyway). He will crush the oppresion of MTV and it's unfortunate "slaves" (aka it's viewers).

By: sirknightly. on 15 Dec 08, 21:07:11
Actually, it is minimalism. It's technical term to describe a modern movement of music. Philip Glass was the example my Music Appreciation teacher used to describe minimalism in college. It can still be good. The term "Minimalism" is not describing the quality of the piece, just some of it's characteristics.

This is probably one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard. Of course, Glass is always attacked for the repetitiveness of his style and his mundane technique, but it all works. The emotion with which such pieces are imbued just amazes me.

By: woaisansan. on 24 Aug 08, 00:26:37
Although to be fair, given some thought, it is not that simple. Recently it has solely become the architect's responsibility to LEARN about architecture and that is a problem. It's so easy to criticize the things happening in Dubai and China but it was not so long ago that Chicago and New York were being criticized in the exact same way, and now they are cultural icons and swarming with preservationists. Architecture reflects society and the only way to change anything is to have perspective.
The fact is that ...
By: woaisansan. on 23 Aug 08, 23:37:03
The fact is that you have no idea how the public will look back and see these buildings in 100 years and it is on that basis that I said your thinking was rigid and small. There is much to learn about architecture from everyone and everything and every project.

By: woaisansan. on 23 Aug 08, 23:36:48
I that it fortunate that you have yours and I have mine. I don't like any of the buildings you've listed either but I still acknowledge them as part of culture. You certainly have the right to judge the architecture itself, but you do not have the right to judge the opinions of others.

By: yohei72. on 23 Aug 08, 18:05:47
One person's "small, rigid thinking" is another person's... oh, I don't know... "standards." You've got yours and I've got mine. Unfortunately, yours seem to be the ones largely dominating architecture for decades. That "Bird's Nest" atrocity at the Beijing Olympics comes to mind as just one of the latest examples.
Are only architects ...
By: yohei72. on 23 Aug 08, 18:03:29
Are only architects allowed to criticize architects? Or are only their fans allowed to comment on them? Do you object to the many positive comments, most of them presumably from people who "don't do"? Artists, especially architects, put their work in the public eye, and often with public dollars. The public is entitled, indeed obliged, to comment, and not just bow. Perhaps YOU should think a little more before regurgitating cliched non-responses that amount to "Stay in your place, peasant."

By: yohei72. on 08 Jun 08, 05:21:10
A charming presence to be sure, but screw him. Another perpetrator of criminally ugly and inhuman buildings. People like Johnson and Gehry will have their names cursed when we've gotten over the sad architectural era we've been in over the last fifty years and more. We'll be stuck having to figure out how to get rid of the ghastly behemoths they've inflicted on the surface of our planet like out-of-control acne.

I think the Chapel at the University of Sain Thomas here in Houston was designed by Philip Johnson. I made it all the way to Senior at St. Thomas before I dropped out in 1986. I'm 51 now. At least I can say that I earned an AA in Economics from Houston Community College. We can't always have it all. I've been running for Mayor of Houston since 1986. Maybe I should have listened to that Astrologer on a radio show that I called into(Or maybe not!) MayorGalvan

Haha- it's funny how he talks shit about his friends in publications. Anyway, I like his style better than someone like Santiago Calatrava because he varies his work. He has a blank slate on every project as opposed Calatrava that has a certain signature or style. All of his works look the same.

By: albenizclay. on 18 Dec 08, 08:50:37
Beautifull as a jungle, as the sky, as the sunshine, as the silence and the music. Emotions... some people only can like Julio Iglesias and feel condident that they understand what music says. Someone that can critisize Philip Glass is someone that cant listen, just listen. Maybe not too minimalist like the last generation. Evolution keeps going.

By: PauloNideck. on 18 Dec 08, 04:38:40
I gave you thumbs down. But now I would like to put it up. Because you have your point here. Maybe you don't like his style. But Glass is minimalism. So you critics are totally real. I feel minimalism as a trippy thing. Sure.. it won't surprise the listener at all. It's not meant to be this way. But in a way I agree with you.
I do agree with you ...
By: Firemajic. on 18 Dec 08, 04:02:23
I do agree with you in most parts to how, yes the song is very much so redundant, but you should also take into consideration that the composer probably prefers this style, it took him time to make it, and that discouraging his work isn't going to make him change anything. instead you could have pointed out the parts you disliked, not shoot it down by saying how much it was "boring and insignificant" and suggest modifications.

By: laurion69. on 15 Dec 08, 20:40:12
Glass is the most boring and insignificant "composer" I ever knew. He is able to repeat the same childish things for dozens and dozens of times... It's incredible how stubborn he is in repeating always the same chords, the same groove of chords, the same banal arpeggios on the triad. He is the negation of the art of surprising the listner.

Pynchon has written 3 good novels; The Crying of Lot 49, V. and Gravitys Rainbow. He has produced nothing of value in the past, oh, 35 years. Roth has written at least a dozen novels that are of the highest caliber and the quality of his work in the last 15 years is unrivaled. Anywhere. [ you might want to check out his novella, The Prague Orgy, Mrtv].

Roth is really a great novelist. The one down turn of his writing is that if you aren't American... well, you won't be able to feel the full grasp of his writings. Great words of Pynchon--one of my favorites as well.

Roth will get the Nobel never. But that don't mean nothing cause he might not be the same bracket with Pynchon, but he is one exceptional writer.Thou the american for the Nobel good enough these is only Pynchon. And not because he is an american but because he is the greatest living writer never won the Nobel.

No mate, you've missed my point. I was simply pointing out that a lot of great American writers have constructed their magnum opus' purely on the theme of their country and the direction in which it's headed. English writers, however, don't. I don't know why I feel the need to respond to a frenchman on the subject of national identity through the medium of literature, but you took a mere opinion for succinct scripture. Please don't call me a moron either, we've (thankfully) never met.

By: FrenchArmy76. on 08 Aug 08, 06:22:46
Moron, what does the literature of America have to do with England? How can the lit of england be americanised? maybe it is because your country england only produces Indian writers and no english ones :p maybe that is where it is going- to India.

By: timboslayer. on 02 Apr 08, 14:14:05
I think felt Lawson (who almost idolises Roth) was more pleased to get this interview than ever! Roth doesn't do many interviews anyway - and Lawson is often a bit flippant and jokey with most of his interviewees. This time you can tell he doesn't want to mess it up - no jibes, interruptions. Just listening.

By: timboslayer. on 02 Apr 08, 14:11:59
I think I know what you mean. I was reading critics' opinions on the Booker Prize and what it currently represents, and the feeling was that we have LOTS of good writers at the moment but no one really to match the Americans when it comes to national(ist) portrayals. However, there was a theme amongst several of them (and I don't think it was just wishful thinking/romantic yearning) that Britain is on the brink of a surge of new writers - given that we have proportionally more writers than ever.

As an Englishman I struggle to identify with the potrait of nationalism a lot of the US greats depict. I'm an avid reader but I'm often left jealous towards the US readers that connect with these amazing novels. (Pynchon, Roth, DeLillo etc.) where is England going? and whose writing this journey now, like the US writers are? What great English writers are there now who write about our country and where it's going? Everything's americanised. Mcewan maybe? but he's scorned upon. What is England?

I can see where you are going. And i can accept that - to a certain limit. If some leader of another country was performing for example mass muderings of different cultural groups, for example jews or black people, we should not stand by the line and share our experiences to that country why it is wrong and wait for a change. Some cases does unfortunately need changes from people outside. Some things are just wrong and not acceptable no matter what cultur you belong to.

No, to no extent am i justifying it. Just because i'm stating something that happens doesnt mean i'm standing up for it. Human morality is a strange thing, early humans would have lived in small settlements & i'm sure village to village morals would have been different. Recently through trial & error & usage of comminication with denser population can we take a good look at our situation & start assessing how we would like to live together. We truly are in the adolescent stage of our species
Humans are very ...
By: jnort122. on 19 Nov 08, 07:28:00
Humans are very capable of rationality. The rape example for instance, to that rapist - it was rational. They convinced themselves with a logical argument that it was rational. The question is: Was it reasonable? It may have made rational sense, meaning logical steps according to their definitions and perspectives, but does it stack against society's view of what 'makes sense' or what is reasonable. Obviously not.
You DO realize that ...
By: Jillybeans25. on 19 Nov 08, 05:52:12
You DO realize that to some extent you're justifying & legitimizing rape, right? You're saying it's OK for some people in some places at some times to rape others. Societal acceptance doesn't make something OK. Again, I would point to Nazi Germany. Frequency of occurrence doesn't make something OK either. And if morality is but trial and error, mere happenstance, then why give a rip about anything? Then there's no such thing as kindness or cruelty - they're all constructions.
Rape is very common ...

Rape is very common among species, our morality has came down through trial & error over the centurys. But remember, there are still cultures in the world where they still live under nomadic, tribal & very basic societies. It's normality there.

Zimbardo's use of the terms "Good" and "Evil" always troubles me. The terms might be useful as shorthand for ideas like "conforms to/acts against societal expectations," but I cringe every time I read one of his papers or listen to one of his talks--even while looking at peoples' outside influences, the connotations of the words are horrendously problematic in psychological discussions.

I think Robert Glenister does more theatre and he is talented and used to be married to Amanda Redman. Philip is so good though he is exceptional. As for Philip being sexy, he always has been it is the golden locks and the fact that his looks are his own, in a world of botoxed men.

NGS. Yep. In part. An underneath this lunar notion lurks all kinds of grim Frankfurt School Marxist theory that suggests that the...respective typist is simply channeling the collective brain-pan of the boojwahzee and that the purpose of this enterprise is to distract us all from the greater Project. The plain truth is this; American academia has been held hostage by bitter, tenured lab technicians for decades.

NGS. Check out SIGNS OF THE TIMES [ Deconstruction and the Fall of Paul de Man]by David Lehman. It is strong garlic re the depraved vampires haunting the corridors of American colleges and universities. Lehman does a bang up job of exposing all the major trends of post-mod, imported lit-crit theory. And....be brave, as you will take a regular beating for having the gall to posit that the author is Undead.

By: molloyx. on 12 Jul 08, 06:25:21
NG. There is alive in American academia a distinctly Stalinist strain [ ha ha, the Human Strain]of imported logic that enjoys the fantasy of reducing all creative output to the corporate urge of the boo-jwah-zee. It is patent nonsense, a grim theory promoted by failed artists with the souls of bitter lab technicians. Roth is the ideal anti-dote, read him and you feel the post - mod toxins leaving your blood.

By: molloyx. on 12 Jul 08, 05:38:06
NG. Pynchon and Vonnegut mattered long before the imported [ French] virus of Post Mod Lit Crit began to suck the air out of creativity on American campuses. The same is true for Barth and Barthelme and Hawkes, Ashbery and Koch. I will stake my life on their importance and singularity. The post mod purists explain these people away as functions of the dominant culture. Beware.

By: molloyx. on 12 Jul 08, 05:03:26
And more than that I mean it in stark contrast to Roths stubborn, heroic project...his insistence that it matters to live in the world and, futhermore, that the strangeness of this real experinece is worthy of close inspection and a dedicated response. A far cry from the glib, nihilistic proscriptions of the amatuer post mods.

glass' piano works, i have found, can be physically very difficult to play. one has to have incredible technique or else you will end up hurting yourself. for example, the arpeggios she starts at 3:30. it takes stamina and great technique to not strain yourself through that passage (and those are everywhere in the metamorphosis)
