'Bout the same as me, I can't remember how old I was exactly, but I was somewhere around that age myself when I first heard it. Old enough to understand it, but not fully. I always found it a very powerful song though and it always made you want to sing along. I'm almost 21 and love this song, and agree with the message behind it, this is one of the best songs ever created.
